Our farm specializes in the legendary Fraser fir, often called the “Cadillac of Christmas trees” for its superior qualities. Native to the Southern Appalachian Mountains, including our high-altitude region, Fraser firs are beloved for their fragrance, beauty, and durability. They have soft, deep-green needles with silvery undersides that give a classic holiday look, and tiered branches sturdy enough to hold your favorite ornaments.
Fraser firs also have excellent needle retention – meaning they stay fresh and keep their needles longer than many other species, especially when cared for properly. It’s no surprise that Fraser firs make up over 90% of Christmas trees grown in North Carolina. When you choose a Boyd Mountain Fraser fir, you’re getting the very best Christmas tree our state (and nature) has to offer.
What makes our trees so special? A lot has to do with where and how they’re grown. Fraser firs naturally grow above 3,000 feet in elevation, and our farm’s location in the Great Smoky Mountains provides the ideal conditions. The cool mountain air, ample rainfall, and rich soil of our region help the trees develop strong branches and a healthy conical shape.
We take advantage of these perfect conditions by carefully selecting and preparing our soil before planting each seedling. Over the course of 7-10 years, our trees slowly mature, adding about a foot of height per year. The result is a hardy, mountain-grown tree that can withstand the indoor holiday environment while still looking lush and full.
When you bring home a tree from Boyd Mountain, you’re truly bringing a piece of the mountains into your home – and you’ll notice the difference in freshness and vitality.
Raising top-quality Christmas trees is a year-round labor of love. Our team doesn’t just work in November and December – we’re out in the fields in all seasons tending to our trees. In spring and summer, we plant new seedlings and carefully fertilize and trim the growing trees to encourage a beautiful, full shape. Each tree gets hand-pruned every year to form the classic Christmas tree silhouette. We manage weeds and monitor for pests or diseases in an environmentally responsible way to keep the trees healthy. During autumn, we tag the most mature trees and get the farm ready for visitors. By the time the holiday season arrives, our Fraser firs are in perfect condition – lush, symmetrical, and ready to be the centerpiece of your family’s celebrations. This attentive care means our trees not only look gorgeous on our hillside, but will also stay fresh and green in your home for weeks with proper care.
When you cut a tree at Boyd Mountain, you’re getting maximum freshness – quite literally, a tree that is alive and thriving until minutes before it goes home with you. Unlike store-bought trees that may have been cut weeks earlier and shipped across the country, our trees remain rooted in the ground, soaking up water and nutrients, until you choose them. This means a healthier tree with better needle retention and a longer life in your living room. We’ll give your tree a fresh trunk cut right before you take it, which helps it absorb water once it’s in its stand. With the combination of our mountain-grown vitality and a fresh cut, our Fraser firs routinely last well through Christmas and into the New Year when cared for (some families tell us their tree is still fresh when they finally take it down!). We stand by the quality and freshness of every tree – if you ever have an issue, let us know and we’ll make it right. Our reputation is built on delivering the perfect Christmas tree, and we take that promise seriously.

Here at Boyd Mountain, we’re passionate about real Christmas trees and the special experience they bring to the holidays. Choosing a real tree means you’re part of a tradition that goes back hundreds of years, yet it’s as heartfelt as ever today. The scent of a real Fraser fir filling your home, the natural beauty of each unique tree, and the fun of decorating its branches with your family – these are joys no artificial tree can provide. Real trees are also an eco-friendly choice: they are biodegradable, recyclable, and grown on sustainable farms like ours that replant yearly. While a plastic tree might sit in a landfill for centuries, your real Christmas tree can be returned to nature after the holidays (many communities turn them into mulch or wildlife habitats). Plus, buying a real tree supports local farmers and businesses. We often say, “From our mountain to your living room, a real tree brings authentic Christmas spirit.” Once you’ve experienced the real tree difference – the freshness, the fragrance, the tradition – we think you’ll never go back. And we’re here to provide that perfect real tree year after year for your family.
This includes the field, pre-cut section, and retail location.
Thank you for another incredible season and for supporting our farm.
We look forward to seeing you next year! 🌲
